I went through several hood designs, ultimately settling on this beauty. Its super deep to give very good top AND side sun protection to the face. The loose balaclava-style hood also keeps the neck protected. The hood is LOOSE enough to still have great air flow but not so loose that it blows off your head in the wind. That last one took a while to dial in and is such a crucial part of the design.
Extra long sleeves for better hand protection. Thumb tabs instead of thumb loops, to keep your thumb tucked under the protection of the fabric. No more sunburned thumbs! All flatlock seams for next-to-skin comfort.
Here is the really fun part: You get to design it! Pick your body, hood and sleeve colors. Pick your seam thread color. Be conservative or go wild! Your choice.
Another big pro of this hoodie: It serves as an excellent winter baselayer as well as a warm weather sun hoodie. I've tested it as both and it does excellent. No need to hang this thing up come November. Take it hiking, skiing, dogsledding, whatever... But it still does great in the heat as well. Your sweat wicks through the wool layer into the quick-drying synthetic layer where it evaoprates quickly, giving a fantastic cooling effect. It is truly a do-it-all sun hoodie.
I live in sun hoodies for most of the year. When I say live in them, I mean like it only comes off of me like 2 hours a week for laundry and showering. This garment has to be able to do everything, be anything and do it with comfort and style. It must provide excellent sun protection. It must be durable, handle a wide range of weather conditions, be easily laundered, stain resistant, antimicrobial, breathable, moisture wicking and fast drying. Check to all of this.
